● The Egyptian Museum

● The pyramids of Giza
The great pyramids of Giza are the most famous structures of mankind. They were built on the western edge of the Nile Valley, around 8 kilometers southwest of the city of Giza. The first and largest pyramids were built in the Old Kingdom. In 1979 the Pyramids of Giza were named a World Heritage Site by Unesco. They are more than 4,500 years old and originated between 2620 and 2500 BC. The pyramids are said to be named after the pharaohs who found their final resting place in them: Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinos. According to information from Herodotus and other historians of antiquity, the pyramids are said to have been built in this order.

The pyramids were a sacred tomb from which the soul of the deceased Pharaoh could go to heaven. The shape of the pyramid symbolized the creation hill, its top pointed up to heaven. It was probably gilded and shone from afar. Its construction was an unimaginably huge undertaking. The pyramid of Cheops alone is made up of 2.3 million stones, each weighing thousands of kilos. To this day it has not been exactly researched how the ancient Egyptians were able to accomplish this enormous task without modern technology. Other special features of the pyramids of Giza are on the one hand the sides of the pyramids because they are exactly aligned with the four cardinal points and there are other signs that the pyramids were built at least partly from an astronomical point of view.
